I'm sure at this point, like myself, you've been quarantined anywhere from 10-16 days. You've spent hours on Facebook engaging in every "#challenge" available, you've cleaned and organized every inch of your house, went for more walks then you have in the past year, and watched the new season of Ozark on Netflix. What else is there to do? Well, if you are like us at Altair Travel, we are having serious travel withdrawals. As a company, we will be putting together 3 books each week that will make your time in coronavirus isolation a little more enjoyable. While spreading some positive travel ju-ju. Enjoy!
1. The Elephant Whisperer
For those of you who have added South Africa to their travel bucket list. This is the book for you! The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony is a beautifully written memoir of Anthony's relationship with the herd of elephants he took in on his Zululand reserve. You will fall in love with the unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife.
One of my favorite travel books is The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony who was asked to accept a herd of “rogue” elephants on his game reserve or else they would be killed. He was the herd’s last hope so he agreed to take them. The book is about the bonding experience he had with the herd through his trials and tribulations and how they became a part of his family. Any reader who is an animal lover will appreciate the special attachment he develops with some of the elephants who come to trust him as part of their family. The book gave me an appreciation for those wonderful souls who spend their lives taking care of these special animals. It made me want to go back to Africa again and again!
Alaska is one of the most beautiful and peaceful destinations in the world. Ice bergs, salmon, whales, sea lions, otters, Northern Lights and SO MUCH MORE. If you have never been to Alaska or would like to relive your Alaskan vacation all over again, James Michener's, Alaska, is the book for you.
Many years ago I read James Mitchener's book, Alaska. I loved reading a story of a community heading to Alaska for the Great Gold Rush. It described their trials and tribulations trying to adjust to the harsh weather and terrain in hopes to find their new fortune, gold.
3. Under the Tuscan Sun
Tuscany is known for its landscapes, history, artistic legacy, delicious cuisine, and culture. Under The Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes provides all of this and MORE. Grab a glass of Chianti, put your feet up, and dive on in!
Under the Tuscan Sun is a beautifully written memoir by Frances Mayes, a published poet, gourmet cook and travel writer. It was also made into a movie starring Diane Lane. The book follows Miss Mayes to Italy as a good friend offers her a special gift - 10 days in Tuscany. Once there she is captivated by its beauty and warmth and, impulsively, buys an aging but very charming villa in the spectacular Tuscan countryside. As she sets about restoring her villa, she falls in love with the beautiful country, its people and its food. I think it's important to have a good read about this beautiful country especially now as it is so devastated by the Corona Virus.
We would love to hear your comments about these three books if you've read them, or suggestions about what books to feature next. Please let us know by leaving a comment at the top of this blog.
